Prices from €20 to €2,120 in Ballinrobe – Gibsey

Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart – Cattle Prices – 03-05-2023

According to Teresa Gibsey, assistant manager at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, prices ranged from €20 to €2,120 at its most recent cattle sale on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

She reported that the Mayo-based mart’s first-of-the-month continental bullock sale was “on the up”, with the highest price per kg remaining at €4.31/kg, as per last week’s levels.

Bullock prices varied from €510 to €2,030 per head or €1.59 to €4.31 per kg. The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.87/kg.

Sample prices in this ring as follows –

  • LMX – 665KG – €2,030 – €3.05/KG;
  • LMX – 415KG – €1,550 – €3.73/KG;
  • CHX – 320KG – €1,380 – €4.31/KG;
  • CHX – 355KG – €1,350 – €3.80/KG;
  • CHX – 285KG – €1,140 – €4.00/KG.

Cull cow prices

Dry cows made from €650 to €2,040, with the top call going to a farmer from Clooneeragh, Ballinrobe, at €2.63/kg with a 775kg LMX.

  • LM – 650kgs – €1,720;
  • SIX – 515kgs – €1,090;
  • AAX – 645kgs – €1,340;
  • CHX – 845kgs – €2,020;
  • FR – 675kgs – €1,370;
  • MOX – 705kgs – €1,270;
  • FR – 570kgs – €890;
  • LMX – 680kgs – €1,620;
  • GAX – 390kgs – €680;
  • LMX – 675kgs – €1,710;
  • LMX – 680kgs – €1,620.

Suckler pairs

Meanwhile, a Limousin-cross cow with a Limousin-cross bull calf at foot fetched €2,120 from Culleen, Cong, with prices from €1,540 upwards in this category.

Calves

According to Gibsey, there was a mixture of Belgian Blue-cross, Aberdeen Angus-cross and Hereford-cross calves on offer with prices from €20 to €390 (80kg – AAX bull calf) with an average of €185 per head.

Heifers

A “good” turnout of heifers saw returns range from €620 to €1,880 per head or €1.98 to €3.65 per kg. The average for heifers 500kg plus was €2.76/kg & heifers 400 to 500kg levelled out at €2.86/kg.

  • LMX – 560KG – €1,680 – €3.00/KG;
  • PTX – 465KG – €1,500 – €3.23/KG;
  • LMX – 380KG – €1,300 – €3.42/KG;
  • LMX – 260KG – €950 – €3.65/KG.

Weanlings

Weanling bulls were a “decent trade”, with prices from €390 to €1,390 per head or €2.39 to €3.74 per kg. The average price for weanling 200kgs to 350kgs was €3.27/kg, and weanlings 350kgs to 450kgs levelled out at €3.19/kg.

  • CHX – 375KG – €1,390 – €3.71/KG;
  • LMX – 365KG – €1,330 – €3.64/KG;
  • CHX – 325KG – €1,200 – €3.69/KG;
  • LMX – 305KG – €1,140 – €3.74/KG.

Weanling heifer prices ranged from €760 to €1060 per head or €3.06 to €3.81 per kg. The average for heifers 200 – 350kg was €3.40/kg, an increase on last week’s average, according to Gibsey.

Prices on the day:

  • LMX – 295KG – €1,060 – €3.59/KG;
  • CHX – 310KG – €1,010 – €3.26/KG;
  • LMX – 265KG – €1,010 – €3.81/KG;
  • LM – 280KG – €1,010 – €3.61/KG.

Note:

  • The mart will continue to run a suck calf sale in ring 3 from 11:30 am sharp every Wednesday until further notice.
  • Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 – Special continental heifer sales – sold after cows
  • From now onwards, special bullock sales will be held on the first and last Wednesday of every month;
  • Sheep sales will continue on Thursdays from 11 am sharp.
