Weanlings ‘on fire’ in Balla with over €4.00/kg for choice lots

According to Stephen Hannon of Aurivo Balla Mart, Tuesday, September 12^th, 2023, saw a “lively” trade prevail for weanling bulls and weanling heifers on the back of activity from ringside and online customers.

Tuesday’s sale followed the mart’s opening weanling show and sale, which Catherina Cunnane of www.thatsfarming.com, attended the week prior, as part of our mart reporting series, with highs of €3,500 recorded, as outlined in this news article.

Weanling bulls

Its most recent Tuesday weanling sale saw choice lots in the weanling bull reach exceed the €4.00/kg mark, with well-conformed lots with Charolais influence being among the highest-selling contenders.

Tuesday’s sale saw a smaller entry than the week prior, with just one ring in operation and selling wrapped up just before 2:30 pm.

Bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.38/kg,  while entries in the 350kg to 450kg weight bracket levelled at €3.24/kg and entries north of 450kg sold for €3.05/kg of an average with the highest call of €1,690 recorded for a LMX, 395kgs.

Topping the charts in this ring at €1,500 or €4.41/kg was a 340kg weanling bull.

Weanling heifer prices

The weanling heifer category saw entries in the 200kg to 350 kg bracket average out at €3.31/kg, while lots 350kg to 450kg changed hands for €3.35/kg.

One Charolais heifer weighing 340g made E1,500.00 or €4.41/kg, while a Limousin-cross 350kg climbed to €1,480.00 or €4.23/kg.
