Tuam: Bullocks to €3,180 & cull cows to €2,700 in ‘blazing’ trade – Devane

According to Marion Devane, Tuam Mart’s spring cattle show and sale on Monday, March 6th, 2023, saw a “spectacular” yard of quality stock.

The mart manager reported that a “blazing trade” prevailed at Monday’s sale, with prices to €2,700 in the cull cow ring, €3,180 in the bullock ring and €2,250 in the heifer ring.

The prize winner of the Pat Dermody Memorial Cup for the best beef cow included:

  • 1st: Michael Stephens, Ballinderry, Corofin, Tuam: 870 kg – CH – €2700 (€3.10/kg);
  • 2nd: Nicholas Byrne, Clare, Oughterard: 870 kg – CH – €2660 (€3.06/kg).

Cow prices:

  • 915 kg LMX by a Cummer farmer made €2700 (€2.95/kg);
  • 675 kg CHX by a Cloghanshill farmer made €2040 (€3.02/kg);
  • 740 kg CHX by a CHX by a Milltown farmer made €2220 (€3.00/kg);
  • 725 kg LM by a Milltown farmer made €2420 (€3.34/kg);
  • 765 kg CHX by a Williamstown farmer made €2170 (€2.84/kg);
  • 895 kg CH by a Dunmore farmer made €2550 (€2.85/kg).

Prize winners of the Paddy Kilgarriff Perpetual Cup for the best pair of beef bullocks included:

  • 1st: Oliver Brennan, Liskeavy, Tuam: 765 kg: LMX/CHX – €2260 (€2.95/kg);
  • 2nd: Vincent Martyn, Woodquay, Tuam: 715 kg – CHX – €2230 (€3.12/kg).

Prize winners of the best beef bullocks sponsored by St. Jarlaths Credit Union include:

  • 1st: John Collins, Enfield, Kilkerrin, Ballinasloe: 1000 kg CHX made €3180 (€3.18/kg);
  • 2nd: Anthony Tolan, Middlemace, Claremorris, Co. Mayo;
  • 3rd: Vincent Martyn, Woodquay, Tuam

The prize winners of the best 3 beef bullocks, sponsored by St. Jarlaths Credit Union was Vincent Martyn, Woodquay Tuam: 633 kg – LMX/CHX – €2030 (€3.21/kg)

Prize winners of the Martin Tyrell Perpetual Cup for the best beef heifer sponsored by Mayo Heath Care include:

  • 1st: Martin Hansberry, Upper Windfield, Menlough, Ballinasloe: 675 kg – LM – €2250 (€3.33/kg);
  • 2nd: Pat Connolly, The Glebe, Cummer, Tuam – 605 kg – LMX – €2260 (€3.74/kg).

Prize winners of the William Burke Cup for the best pair of heifers included:

  • 1st: Seamus Hession, Gortbeg, Ballyglunin. Tuam: 580 kg – LM – €1740 (€3.00/kg);
  • 2nd: Niall Daly, Ballinacregg, Cummer, Tuam: 697 kg – CH – €2180 (€3.13/kg).
