Carnew Mart – cattle prices – 04-12-2021
According to David Quinn, cattle were up by €20-€50/head on the previous weeks at Carnew Mart on Saturday, December 4th, 2021.
The mart manager reported that a larger entry, comprising just under 900 lots, went under the hammer at its general cattle sale.
“Cows, with 360 on offer, met a very strong trade. Factory agents, wholesalers and northern buyers were out in force for stock of all qualities.”
“This led to a top price of €2,350 for a black cow 1,000kg,” he added.

Quinn added: “Friesian cows out of the parlour sold from €1.38/kg to €1.80 for better cows.”
“The lighter longer keep cows sold from €1/kg to €1.20/kg.”
“Cattle were a very lively trade throughout with quality lots meeting a very strong trade. Farmers and exporters battled it out for the top quality lots.”
“This led weanling heifers and bulls to make between €2.60/kg and €2.90/kg. Specialist finishers and feedlot agents were very active for the forward stores. Factory agents and wholesalers were very strong for the beef and fleshed cattle.”

Bull prices:
Quinn reported that bulls again were a “very strong trade”. He noted that many farmer customers were active for weanlings-type bulls and paid up to €2.90/kg for quality lots.

- 400KG – LM – €970;
- 360KG – LM – €870;
- 370KG – LM – €910;
- 450KG – CH – €1090;
- 280KG – LMX – €820.
Calf prices:
- Continental bulls – €240-€390;
- Continental heifers – €220-€370;
- HE and AA bulls – €230-€315;
- HE and AA heifers – €189-€270;
- Export-type Friesian bulls €40-€90;
- ‘Farmer-type’ Friesian bulls €105-€160.
Runners
Quinn reported that Friesian runners sold from €300-€390, while continental runner bulls changed hands from €390-€710.
Meanwhile, runner heifers sold from €510 to €660, while HE and AA bulls went under the hammer from €420-€590 and HE and AA heifers climbed from €275-€390.
“We have a big entry of Jersey-type runner bulls selling from €175 to €290. All in all, a very successful sale with 100% clearance,” he concluded.
