Balla: Dry cows to €2,880 & stock bulls to €2,560

Aurivo Balla Mart – Cattle Prices – 29-04-2023

According to Stephen Hannon, over 1,000 cattle came under the hammer at Aurivo Balla Mart’s general cattle sale on Saturday, April 30^th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The manager of Balla Mart and general manager of Aurivo Marts reported that “prices were up again on last week, especially store heifers around 400kg as farmers are buying for grass”.

Prices reached €2,590 in the bullock ring, while heifers maxed out at €2,100, stock bulls hit €2,560, cull cows soared to €2,880, and sucklers peaked at €2,500 at Saturday’s weekly cattle sale.

Bullock prices

According to Hannon, bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €3.24/kg, while stores in the 400kg to 500kg bracket levelled out at €3.10/kg and heavier bullocks 500kg were up and averaged out at €3.01/kg.

He noted that quality heavy bullocks 700kg+ “performed well” and maxed out at €1,800 with the weight in this ring with highs of €2,590.

Heifer prices

In ring two this week, close to 400 heifers crossed the scales, with lots up to 400 kg averaging out at €3.10/kg and entries 400kg to 500kg levelling out at €2.98/kg and those 500kg averaging €3.02/kg.

There was a BBX heifer born in April 2022, which weighed 325kg and made €1,580 or €4.86/kg and another BBX weighing 435kg sold for €2,100 or €4.83/kg.
