Health organisations across the globe are urging the public to regularly wash their hands in order to slow down the spread of Covid-19.
The Department of Health has issued a video, explaining the impact that soap and water have on the virus.
The following are details from the video on the importance of handwashing:
- Soap dissolves the outer layer, or membrane, of a virus;
- Without this membrane, the virus falls apart and becomes inactive;
- The virus detaches from the skin and falls apart in soapy water;
- Skin is a rough surface, which means you have to rub and soak to ensure maximum reach;
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds each time and dry them thoroughly;
- When soap and water are not practical, disinfectants, alcohol wipes and gels are also effective.
