The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is seeking applications for appointment to the role of assistant agricultural inspector food science.
The position, may involve outdoor off-site work, and will be in one of its labs or offices throughout the country.
Depending on the work assigned and working as part of a team, one or a combination of the following tasks may be allocated to the successful candidate, the DAFM states in the job listing:
- Contribute to the development and implementation of food safety control programmes and systems. This can involve carrying out audits and inspections;
- Ensure the effective operation of market support schemes;
- Bring scientific expertise and other knowledge to bear on policy evaluation and analysis in the agri-food sector;
- Certification of agri-food products for export to third countries;
- Participate in negotiations and meetings which pertain to the development and implementation of EU legislation relating to the agri-food sectors;
- Monitor and assess developments in trade and industry and advise on factors influencing trade in the agri-food sector;
- Supervision, training and management of staff;
- Development, validation and implementation of analytical methods for food products;
- Liaison with internal and external stakeholders and provision of expert opinion/scientific advice;
- Represent the DAFM at national and international fora;
- Provide oversight on the implementation and maintenance of laboratory quality assurance programmes in accordance with the requirements of ISO 17025.
Educational requirements:
Candidates must, on or before October 27th, 2022:
- Hold a primary degree qualification at level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) in food or dairy science or other bioscience degree with a minimum 2.2 honours result (i.e. Grade Point Average equivalent to or greater than 2.48 out of 4.20 in their level 8 degree);
- The primary food/dairy science or other bioscience degree must have food microbiology and/or food chemistry and/or food technology as a major component of the degree that is acceptable to the DAFM.
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualifications and/or work experience in production and quality control in the food processing sector or in food testing laboratories;
- Have a “strong” awareness of current scientific and other challenges facing the Irish agri-food sectors;
- Excellent communication skills (listening, written and verbal);
- Ability to work “effectively” in a team;
- Capacity to operate in wide and sometimes varied professional scientific capacities;
- Commitment to continuous professional development;
- A “strong” work ethic and ability to prioritise many tasks and deliver in a “timely” manner.
