Renewed Northern Ireland interest drives demand at Castlerea

A good number of stock presented for sale at Castlerea Mart on Thursday (June 11th), according to a mart spokesperson.

A good trade for calves and runners was reported, while cows with calves at foot reached a top price of €2010.

Quality dry cows were also in demand, with top cows exceeding €2/kg. Demand was firm in the heifer and weanling ring with renewed interest from buyers from Northern Ireland but quality was still a major factor in prices, according to the spokesperson.

Store heifers fetched €2.62/kg while weanling heifers peaked at €3.31/kg.

  • CH – 385kg – €940;
  • LM – 385kg – €930;
  • LM – 465kg – €1220;
  • CH – 480kg – €1180;
  • LM – 440kg – €1090;
  • CH – 650kg – €1390;
  • CH – 565kg – €1340;
  • CH – 625kg – €1340.

Weanling heifers:

  • SI – 290kg – €960;
  • LM – 255kg – €740;
  • CH – 260kg – €700;
  • CH – 350kg – €1090;
  • AAX – 325kg – €880;
  • LMX – 315kg – €830;
  • LM – 325kg – €820;
  • SI – 415kg – €1000.

Dry cows:

  • LMX – 755kg – €1520;
  • LMX – 720kg – €1500;
  • LMX – 750kg – €1440;
  • LM – 490kg – 850;
  • CH – 770kg – €1470.

Other categories:

  • Cows with calves at foot made from €1030 to €2010 for a Limousin cow and her heifer calf at foot;
  • Springers made from €950 to €1260 per head;
  • Young calves made from €150 to €350.
