Bullocks to €2,180 & dry cows to €1,880 in Ballinrobe – Gibsey

According to Teresa Gibsey, assistant manager at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, Co Mayo, bullocks reached €2,180, while heifers topped at €1,660 and dry cows peaked at €1,880 at its most recent cattle sale on Wednesday, July 26th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

Gibsey reported that “some super quality” bullocks changed hands at this week’s sale, with returns from €780 to €2,180 per head or €2.05 to €2.73 per kg.

The average for bullocks north of 500kgs was €2.45/kg, while lighter bullocks 400 to 500 kgs levelled at an average of €2.21/kg.

Prices on the day as follows:

  • LMX – 800KG – €2,180 – €2.73/KG;
  • CHX – 775KG – €2,080 – €2.68/KG;
  • CHX – 700KG – €1,900 – €2.71/KG;
  • LMX – 765KG – €2,010 – €2.63/KG;
  • CHX – 490KG – €1,130 – €2.31/KG;
  • CHX – 335KG – €780 – €2.33/KG.

Dry cows

Meanwhile, this week’s average price for dry cows stood at €1525 per head.

Cow prices ranged from €930 to €1,880 with the highest price going to a farmer from Cahermaculick, Shrule at €2.07/kg with a 2016-born AAX out of a FR dam, weighing 910kg.

Other prices:

  • AAX – 2016-born – 785kgs – €1,740;
  • PTX – 2014-born – 775kgs – €1,580;
  • CHX – 2018-born – 665kgs – €1,450;
  • SIX – 2018-born – 730kgs – €1,575.

Suckler pairs

In addition, the sale attracted a “handful” of cows with calves at foot on offer with prices ranging from €1,350 to €1,860 for a Charolais-cross cow with a Limousin-cross bull calf at foot.

Heifers

Heifer prices varied from €550 to €1,660 per head or €1.93 to €2.99 per kg. The average for heifers 500kg plus was €2.43/kg and entries in the 400 to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €2.47/kg.

Note:

  • Bookings for cattle sales on 094-9541140. There will be no cattle sale on August 2nd, 2023; however, the mart will host its weekly sheep sale on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023.
