Castlerea Mart’s final cattle sale of 2020 attracted “good numbers” of stock, according to Brendan Egan.
The mart manager noted that bullocks peaked at €2.69/kg, while heifers hit €3.16/kg at the sale on Thursday, December 17th, 2020.
“Store bullock and heifers remained a good trade as customers sourced stock in the lead up to Christmas. Breeding stock remained a good trade also as a good clearance was reported.”
“Weanlings were similar in price to last week with quality the key factor. The dry cow trade remained firm also with good numbers on offer.”

Prices at Castlerea Mart
A large entry was presented for sale at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, December 10th, according to Brendan Egan.
In the heifer ring, prices strengthened with a good attendance of customers sourcing stock prior to the Christmas period.
Meanwhile, in the weanling rings, bulls met with an improved trade, with lots peaking at €4.15/kg and heifers at €3.39/kg.
Egan reported that dry cows remained a firm trade, especially forward lots.
“All eyes were upon a sale of 8 suckler cows with Belgian Blue-cross calves at foot. A top price of €7,000 was paid for a 2017-born BBX cow and her bull calf at foot with demand outstepping supply.”
