‘One of the greatest stockmen’ dies after quad bike crash

A man has died following a quad bike crash in Co. Antrim.

Police were called to the scene of the collision on Ballyvennaght Road shortly before 3:50 pm on Sunday, December 20th.

The male, aged in his forties, was hospitalised after the collision. He has since passed away at Royal Victoria Hospital, where he was treated for head injuries.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The collision was reported to police shortly before 3:50 pm on Sunday. It was reported the man came off a quad bike on Ballyvennaght Road.”

“He was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries, but he sadly passed away in hospital yesterday afternoon.”

Appeal for witnesses 

Inspector O’Brien is appealing to anyone who may have been on the Ballyvennaght Road and saw the man on the bike prior to when the collision was reported to police, or has dashcam footage, to get in touch.

Inspector O’Brien added: “We are working to establish exactly what occurred and would ask anyone with information to call 101, and quote reference number 1202 of 20/12/20.”

Tributes

The crash victim has been named as Ciaran Devlin.

Cara McShane, local councillor, told Q Radio: “Ciaran was renowned throughout North Antrim and extremely popular among the farming community.”

“Many people have described him to be as one of the greatest stockmen, a great worker from a well-respected family.

“This tragedy is made even more profound just given days before Christmas. The thoughts and prayers of all the people in this community are with the Devlin family at this time.”
