Hereford heifer weanling with ‘undeniable show potential’ sells for €6,000

A February-2020-born heifer has sold for what is believed to be a year-to-date record Hereford breed top female price of €6,000.

Gouldingpoll 1 Fanny 1085 ET found a new home through Denis Barrett Auctions/Pedigree Sales’ online-only functions. According to the renowned award-winning auctioneer, this facility “caters for all auctions for single animals to multiple lots”.

Kevin McOscars of Oscar Polled Herefords, Cookstown, Northern Ireland acquired the weanling heifer.

‘You can’t miss her’

Ahead of the sale, the breeders described the heifer as “extremely long, thick, correct and flashy”. “You walk into the paddocks, and you can’t miss her. With undeniable show potential, she’s our clear pick of the heifers from 2020.”

“With a five-star replacement index, she’s not just good looks. From the fantastic Fanny cow, 621, she is a full sibling to Double Decker and maternal sister to Fanny 800 Tullamore champion.”

“One of the last G’poll Captain daughters, as no more semen is available. She can be export qualified.”

Following the sale, they said: “We are very pleased to announce, our sale heifer, Gouldingpoll 1 Fanny 1085 ET will be heading north to join Kevin McOscar’s herd of Oscar Polled Herefords and Island Farm Aberdeen Angus in Northern Ireland.”

“There she joins the record-breaking Duchess heifers that topped our sale last year! We wish Kevin all the best with her and cannot wait to see how she develops and breeds for him!”

31 registered bidders

Denis Barrett Online Auctions said: “We would also like to thank all the underbidders who took part, we had 31 registered bidders, from Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and France.”

“[This] was very commendable on a single lot auction. The bidding opened at €1,500 and progressed up with five bidders tic / tacking on bids, with two bidders taking the lead from €4,000 on with the Mr McOscar being the eventual winner over a bidder from England. We wish the buyer the very best of luck with their purchase.”

Gouldingpoll Herefords operates an “all AI programme using the best available genetics”. Its breeding strategy is to keep females “full of character, power and fleshing ability”.
