‘Farmer Michael’ has released a heart-wrenching John Lewis-style video on loneliness at Christmas.
The popular Irish comedian is reminding the public to “remember to check on those you love” during the festive season.
The video shows the comedian playing an elderly man depicting loneliness this Christmas. His only outlet, the local pub, has closed its doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.
He sits on a barstool in the empty setting, highlighting the social aspect of public houses.
In the final scenes, he vacates the premises and ventures home. There, he is greeted by his wife who hands him a pint at their kitchen table. According to the comedian, the final scene represents hope.
The video was shot in Cookes Thatch Bar in Galway with assistance from Paul David Murphy and Roxanna Goldbey.
Loneliness and isolation
In a post on social media, Sir Stevo Timothy, said: “So, we decided to do a John Lewis-style video to explore loneliness and isolation during the Christmas season. We did it a budget of zero.”
“It is possibly the saddest video we’ve ever done and we hope it’ll make you think but most of all implore you to remember to check on elderly relatives, friends and neighbours who may feel alone.”
“We are all affected by these extreme times we are living in, especially with Covid, but some are more prone to these ill effects. We hope you enjoy the video and hope it will inspire you to act.”
‘Pull-on your heartstrings’
In an update, he said: “Absolutely delighted by the response to our John Lewis-style video. I wanted to elicit emotions and pull on your heartstrings and I hope I succeeded.”
“The idea was to highlight the loneliness experienced by people and especially the elderly at this time of year.”
“The only social outlet is their local but yet, many remain closed. Many of our people remain isolated, afraid, and hopeless. We must remember them at this time of year, not only remember them but visit them, call them, show them they are not alone.” he concluded.
