Station Road Mart in Cootehill, Co. Cavan has announced its closure with immediate effect.
Jimmy and Carmel O’Reilly, joint directors of Station Road Mart LTD, have confirmed that as and from January 15th, 2021, the company will no longer be operating the mart premises.
In a statement, they expressed their “profound” gratitude to all customers, staff, and suppliers.
In a post on social media on January 11th, the mart said: “Hi all. Due to the continuing high number of Covid cases, we will not be holding our sheep sale tomorrow Tuesday 12th January or our cattle sale this Wednesday 13th January. Stay safe everyone and we will keep you updated.”
The mart held its final sheep sale on Tuesday, December 15th, 2020 and its final cattle sale on Wednesday, December 16th, 2020.
Cootehill Mart opened its doors to the public for the first sale on September 4th, 2013, 12 years after the original market closed down due to the foot and mouth outbreak.
Mart closure
Mountrath Mart, Co. Laois ceased trading in January 2019 after over five decades. It is understood that management closed the premises due to rising costs and insurance premium hikes.
Meanwhile, in 2019, Carrick-on-Suir Livestock Sales announced that it will not re-open following a fire.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the building.
In a statement at the time, a spokesperson said: “At a director’s meeting on Friday the 16th of November, having considered all the options, it was decided by the majority not to reopen Carrick Livestock Sales, Ltd.
“The directors listed the main reasons for this decision as being escalating insurance costs coupled with the increased cost required for ongoing regulations facing the sector.”
“The directors would like to thank all their loyal customers who have supported them over the years, since the mart opened in 1955.
“They would also like to thank their loyal staff, past and present, who helped make Carrick-on-Suir Livestock Sales the success that it was. They also mentioned with gratitude the excellent catering service provided by the Duggan, Lonergan and Holden families.”
Carrick-on-Suir Livestock Sales have always had an excellent relationship with their neighbouring residents and would like to thank them for their support and forbearance.”
“Similarly, the traders and the people of the town have always been supportive of the mart and for that the directors will always be grateful.”
“The directors expressed their gratitude to the Department of Agriculture for their support and help over the years. A word of thanks must also go to Tipperary Fire Service for their help on the night of the fire at the mart premises.”
“Carrick-on-Suir Livestock Sales received much support from its friends in the wider mart circle at this difficult time and are very grateful for this support and would like to wish them all the best for the future.” the spokesperson concluded.
