Weather: What’s in store after Storm Brendan?

Met Éireann has warned that Storm Brendan is set to bring extreme winds and heavy rain today (Monday, January 13th).

The entire country has been placed under a status orange wind warning, while a status red warning has been issued for marine areas.

There will be coastal flooding due to a combination of onshore winds, spring tides and storm surge. Clearer conditions, with showers of rain and hail, will follow from the west during the afternoon, with an ongoing risk of thunder.

“Winds will veer southwesterly with the clearance and ease somewhat, although it will remain windy with stormy conditions persisting on coasts.”

Temperatures are set to reach 7 to 10 degrees in the afternoon, while there will be lows of 1 to 2 degrees tonight. It will be mainly dry tonight with isolated showers.

The national forecaster has warned that some showers may turn wintry, with a risk of frost.

Tuesday – Tomorrow will bring some isolated showers, which will give rise to cloudy conditions and rain.

Temperatures will be as low as 3 and 5 degrees, with rain expected to “turn wintry” for a period; this will clear eastwards later in the day, followed by showers.

Met Éireann outlined that winds will become moderate to fresh, mainly westerly in direction, although locally strong south-west winds are expected in the south-east for a time in the afternoon.

Temperatures will fall to 1 or 2 degrees tomorrow night with showers on coasts for a time, but otherwise, it will be dry and clear.

Wednesday – It will be a clear day with sunshine and showers with highs of 6 to 9 degrees.

Showers will be frequent along coasts, but isolated elsewhere, according to the national forecaster. Cloud will increase from the southwest, bringing rain overnight, which will be widespread and heavy for a time.

Thursday – Rain will clear to showers with fresh southerly winds veering south-westerly.

Friday – Met Éireann said that current indications suggest it will be mainly dry, although there is a signal for a showery spell across the northern half of the country.
