Weanling bull prices fall slightly at Elphin

A steady trade gave rise to a 95% clearance in Elphin Mart’s cull cow ring on Monday (March 16th), according to Gerry Connellan.

The mart manager outlined that dry cows averaged €1,214 and ranged from €1,214 to €1,480 – a price that was paid for a Charolais weighing 835kg.

Springers:

The average price achieved by springers was €1,230 as prices ranged from €960 to €1,500 for a Charolais cow with her time-up early March to a Limousin bull.

All suckler pairings offered for sale found new homes, according to Connellan. He noted that they achieved an average price of €1,575 as pairs climbed from €1,470 to €1,680.

Bull weanlings:

“We had a 66% clearance of bull weanlings with prices a bit less but governed by quality.” the mart manager explained. 

  • <300kg – the average price was €700 with a maximum of €850 for a 300 kg Limousin;
  • 300-400kg – the average price was €872 with a maximum of €1,040 for a 305 kg Charolais;
  • 400-500 kg – the average price achieved was €929 with a maximum of €1,085 for a 405 kg Charolais.

Heifer weanlings:

“We had a 68% clearance of heifer weanlings with prices governed by quality.”

  • <300 kg – the average price achieved was €708 with a maximum of €735 for a 295 kg Charolais;
  • 300-400 kg – the average price achieved was €747 with a maximum of €900 for a 380 kg Charolais;
  • 400-500 kg – the average price achieved was €933 with a maximum of €1,050 for a 410 kg Charolais.

Sheep

“A 94% clearance of lambs with prices steady,” said Connellan, who added that 90% of ewes changed hands from €44-€147, while breeding sheep pushed from €180-€250.

Lambs:

  • 54.5 kg – €138;
  • 48 kg – €132;
  • 40 kg – €110;
  • 36.5 kg – €83;
  • 30 kg – €35.
