During lockdown, when Jackie Ryan, was not working at Equine Veterinary Medical Center – EVMC in Qatar, she put her veterinary nursing skills to the test on the farm in Co. Kildare.
She cared for DeeDee, a ewe with deformed front limbs, that was unable to walk.
“So, just like we do with foals, we put bandages and splints on her to help straighten them. We needed to teach her to walk using a string to guide her bandaged leg.”
Ryan explained that the ewe made progress daily and eventually started walking without bandages.
“We even made her a customised boot to help her bear weight on her right leg.” added the veterinary nurse, who explained that while DeeDee’s leg is not fully straight, it is getting stronger every day.
