ABP research has found that selecting superior bulls can both reduce carbon emissions from meat production as well as offer an economic benefit to farmers.
Over 3,000 animals have been involved in their trials over the last 5 years.
ABP established its research farm in Co. Wexford in 2014 to focus on producing more sustainable dairy-beef production, having found that 85% of their farm to fork carbon footprint is associated with farm and livestock emissions.
The meat processing company stated that they found superior bulls will produce offspring with an earlier finishing age, which will, in turn, have a significant reduction on carbon emissions.
They stated that selecting such bulls will have a positive economic impact on the farmer, including a better feed conversion ratio and improved returns on animal carcase value of between €150-€200.
