VIDEO: Managing surplus grass on a 42-cow suckler farm

David Murphy farms a 42-cow suckler herd in Co. Cork.

The Grass Course member calves fifteen breeding females before Christmas, while the remaining cows follow in springtime.

Participating in a local grass course has helped him improve his grassland management practices.

The suckler farmer took his first-cut of silage on May 25th and had approximately 200 bales; this area of ground will be covered by 2,000 gallons of diluted slurry and three bags of Pasture Sward.

“My aim is to walk the farm once-a-week to see what grass I have on. I use Pasture Base to measure grass to keep quality grass ahead of my cows.”

“I have surplus grass on my farm, so, I am now making some hay to have feed for the winter. My farm is growing well, and I will convert surplus grass into round bales of silage.”

“I do some reseeding on the farm every year. I reseed because I want to have good-quality grass for my animals,” he concluded.
