VIDEO: ‘If they can grow in Monaghan – they can grow anywhere in Ireland’

Brothers, Turlough and Fintan Keenan, run an organic tillage farm in Co. Monaghan.

The objective of their enterprise is to revive the Irish heritage grain production.

In this video from the Irish Organic Association, the Keenans say: “Up until the 1930s, wheat was grown widely throughout Ireland. There’s this kind of hearsay attitude like ‘you can’t grow wheat in Ireland for bread production’ and I thought that can’t be right.”

“We always had an interest in the farm when helping out our mother and that brought us to where we are today. If we can find varieties that can grow here in Monaghan, then they can grow anywhere else in Ireland.”

“We’re not using artificial fertilisers or sprays, and we’re making it work. That has led us to where we are today, to something that has gained national attention and is at the tip of the spear: local, organic, sustainable food.”
