VIDEO: ‘I get some funny looks when people realise it’s a woman driving a tractor’

Daphne Scott, who features in the National Rural Network’s women in ag video series, is a sheep farmer based in Co. Cavan.

She runs her own dog grooming and boarding business called Precious Pets since she was fourteen.

She studied dairy business at UCD and worked for Grassland Agro for a number of years before returning to the family farm and Precious Pets.

Sheep farming venture

“In 2013, I started up my own mobile pet farm and this is the reason I bought my first three sheep.”

“The cuteness of lambs at lambing-time grew my love for sheep and in 2018, when I got the chance to buy my own land, I started sheep farming.”

Scott believes that women have a “major” role to play in the agricultural industry.

“I like doing some machinery work and still to this day, I get some funny looks when people realise it’s a woman driving a tractor.”

“Farming can be a very physical job but there are ways of reducing this, to make life easier for yourself.”
