Distraction cattle handling technique
Dr Don Finlay, a veterinarian with over 40 years of experience, has been developing the tubular stainless-steel device for well over a decade.
The University of Saskatchewan in Canada has researched distraction cattle handling and ‘the effects of an oral distraction on cattle during a painful procedure’ and published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal.
There is scientific proof that oral distraction is a powerful tool for minor procedures, according to the company.
The distraction cattle handling technique is used in the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin in the USA as well as the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta in Canada.
Easy Boss E is also used at the Old’s Agricultural College in Alberta Canada in its stock handling courses where they teach processing procedures at their 400-head feedlot.
Don is still finding uses for EBE in the cattle yard or barn. He is receiving “many positive comments” from the farmers who have adopted the distraction technique with their animals.
How does it work?
When the device is correctly in place, the insert is fully within the mouth. The tip is in the oesophagus, and this stimulates the chewing reflex which soothes and distracts the animal.
So much so, that once in a headgate and with EBE inserted, many standard procedures can be carried out with minimal fuss. Examinations, clipping, injections, semen testing, udder issues, AI, pregnancy testing, hoof trimming, freeze branding, ear tagging, horn trimming, drenching, bolus administration, pink eye treatment, calf acceptance issues, to name a few.
“The EBE is not a tool to replace the analgesias or anaesthetics. However, it will certainly enable the administration of these medications with its distraction capabilities. It can facilitate procedures such as caesareans, abscess evacuations, wound management and the likes, keeping the animal occupied whilst being treated.”
Being of tubular surgical grade stainless steel, the Easy Boss E can also be used in conjunction with the Neogen 70 ml syringe to administer oral medications directly to the cattle’s oesophagus, with no wastage.
In collaboration with a 5 Lt backpack or 20 Lt drum, cattle work can become streamlined and efficient.
