Vegan abused girlfriend if she ‘came home smelling of meat’

A “strict” vegan beat his other half and subjected her to abuse if she “came home smelling of meat”, a court has heard.

Christopher Ellam, who reportedly did not allow his girlfriend to consume animal products and controlled what she watched on TV, appeared before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court in April of this year.

The 22-year-old male pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage and sending indecent or grossly offensive messages for the purpose of causing anxiety or distress, according to ExaminerLive.co.uk.

“Violent and abusive”

His girlfriend of four years revealed that his “violent and abusive” behaviour had ruined her life and left her feeling anxious, depressed, and unable to sleep due to nightmares, the publication reports.

The court heard how Ellam hit his girlfriend using a vinegar bottle, which caused bruising to her body.

He was sentenced to a community order, including the 33-day building better relationships programme; he must also complete up to 10 rehabilitation activity days and 200 hours of unpaid work.
