50 lots for Behan’s Valentine’s Vixens online sale

The Clonagh herd’s adeptly named hotly anticipated forthcoming virtual sale, Valentine’s Vixens, is set to feature on Mart Eye’s online platform, in partnership with Heatherington & Harrison, Borderway Mart, Carlisle and Mid-Tipp Mart later this week.

The sale – which will run between February 10th and February 13th – will comprise 50 lots – 36 females, 12 bulls and 2 frozen embryos.

Of the 36 females catalogue, there are 23 Simmental – the entire autumn crop of heifers and the majority of winter/spring-born natural and embryo calves.

The entire crops of both Limousin (10) and Charolais (3) heifers will also come under the hammer.

Valentine’s Vixens

Speaking to That’s Farming’s Catherina Cunnane ahead of the sale, Garrett and Lyndsey Behan commented:

”The sale is taking place on MartEye, H& H is involved and Mid-Tipp Mart is handling financial transactions.”

“The females on offer have something for everyone and every budget. From top show females to foundation females, herd starters or a herd finisher for anyone looking to get their hands on a certain family line to complete their herd.”

“Among the star lots is what has come to be known as the divorce heifer, the one we probably should not be selling, Nigella Posh.”

“Her full sister is here; her dam is still young and fresh, and she stands to be made again. We hope she sells well and does us proud where ever she ends up.”

“There is also a national calf champion, sisters of champions, daughters of champions and two full sisters of the €52,000 Clonagh Lucky Explorer.”

“Of the 10 Limousin heifers on offer, 8 are by Tomschoice Lexicon, a bull whom we have been delighted with over the past two seasons.”

“Not only are his progeny oozing with shape and style, but they are also without a doubt the most docile Limousin cattle we have ever worked with.”

“There are 3 Charolais heifers for sale, the first we have ever offered for sale from the herd. They do back to our two foundation females, Goldstar Beatrix and Castlemartin Rachel.”

“When establishing a new breed on the farm, there was a lot of research invested before any money was spent, and neither of these females left us down,” they added.

Bulls

There are 12 bulls also entered in the sale, 7 Simmentals, 3 Limousin, 1 Charolais and 1 hybrid bull by the herd’s senior herd sire, Manor Park Hansome, out of an “extreme muscled” Limousin cow, Clonagh Lyndsey Babe.

Of the bulls on offer, the breeders feel they have “a special one” in Clonagh Noddy, which they described as “the stamp of his father, Hansome, if not a touch better, and coming from a cracking Banwy T-Rex cow”.

All bulls will be fertility tested prior to collection, and the breeders are offering the option for all bulls sold to remain on-farm until April 1st, 2023.

This year’s frozen embryo offerings are from Clonagh Gold Card and Cloneygowan Temptress Posh, making them ET full siblings to both the Overall Senior Female of the Year 2022 and the Overall Junior Female of the Year 2022, Clonagh Majestic Trixie and Clonagh Nympette Posh ET.

The breeders continued:

“As this is an online sale, once again, we have placed the biggest emphasis on the videos of the cattle for sale with as many angles given as possible.”

“Also can be seen walking where possible, although some could not resist a good kick around the field at the first sight of freedom,” they remarked.

“Photographs of dams, siblings etc., are available on our website and social media in as many lots as possible.”

Little’s remarks

Heatherington & Harrison auctioneer, James Little, believes that the reputation of the Clonagh pedigree and the “exceptional” strength of the H&H-approved UK customer following could also make this a “record-breaking sale”.

He commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be entrusted with the sale of such high calibre pedigree livestock by one of southern Ireland’s most prominent and respected breeders.”

“It is a privilege for us, and we are very confident that in conjunction with the established credibility of Mart Eye, we can showcase the Clonagh cattle to leading breeders across the whole of the UK.”

Free transport will be available for all cattle sold in the UK. ROI delivery will be arranged to various collection points also where possible.
