Bullocks and heifers steady, but plainer stock a harder sell at Tuam

Tuam Mart report – cattle prices – 23-08-2021

According to Marion Devane, a “very strong” trade prevailed for cull cows at Tuam Mart on Monday, August 23rd, 2021.

The mart manager reported that heavy, continental-type cows dominated this week’s general cattle sale.

The top price per kilo went to a Tuam farmer for a 665 kg LMX cow that made €1,960 0 €2.37/kg.

Other prices included:

  • 775kg – SIX cow by a Belclare farmer – €1630 – €2.10/kg;
  • 835 kg – CHX cow by a Barnaderg farmer – €2,030 €2.33/kg;
  • 835 kg – AAX cow by a Milltown farmer – €1610 – €1.93/kg.

She reported that “the bullock and heifer trade remained steady for good continental stock, but plainer stock were a tougher trade”.

According to the mart manager, close to 200 bullocks were on offer.

  • 315 kg – LMX by a Tuam farmer – €940 – €2.98/kg;
  • 390 kg – LMX – €1040 – €2.67/kg;
  • A pair of 422kg LMX bullocks – €1140 – €2.70/kg;
  • 535 kg – LMX bullock by a Dunmore farmer – €1440 – €2.69/kg;
  • A 670 kg – LMX by a Tuam farmer – €1730 – €2.58/kg.
Heifer prices:
  • 375 kg – CHX by a Tuam farmer – €1010 -€2.69/kg;
  • 380kg – BAX by an Athenry farmer – €1000 – €2.86/kg;
  • 425 kg – LMX by a Ballinasloe farmer – €1150 -€2.71/kg;
  • 490 kg – CHX by a Barnaderg farmer – €1230 – €2.51/kg;
  • 635 kg – LMX heifer by a Tuam farmer – €2.85/kg.
Sheep prices: 17-08-2021

Devane reported that close to 1,700 sheep were on offer at Tuesday’s (August 17th, 2021) sale.

“Similar to last week, a large number of ewe lambs were presented for sale.”

Prices included:

  • 40 kg lambs by a Tourmakeady farmer – €110 – €2.75/kg;
  • 45 kg lambs by a Turloughmore farmer – €123 -€2.70/kg;
  • 50.4 kg lambs by another Turloughmore farmer -€130 – €2.68.

Top prices include:

  • 39 kg ewe lambs making by a Claregalway farmer – €130 – €3.33/kg;
  • 32.5 kg lambs by a Tuam farmer – €101 – €3.11/kg;
  • 55 kg ewe lambs by a Tuam farmer – €170 – €3.09/kg;
  • 44.5kg ewe lambs by a Ballyhaunis farmer – €133 – €2.99/kg.
Breeding stock and cull ewes 

“A larger selection breeding stock was on offer. Prices for breeding ewes ranged from €144 to €200.”

“A pen of 2nd & 3rd crop Mule Lanark ewes by a made €196.”

“A small selection of hoggets on offer, and prices ranged from €165 to €242.”
“The old ewe trade remains very strong with prices surpassing the €2/kg mark for some lots.”

  • A pen of 94.5 kg by an Irishtown farmer – €194 – €2.05/kg;
  • A pen of 112 kg ewes – €222 – €1.98/kg.
