Lambs back €5/head and ‘measurable change’ in cull ewe prices at Tuam

Tuam Mart report – sheep prices – 14-09-2021

According to Marion Devane, almost 2,400 sheep were offered at Tuam Mart, Co Galway, on Tuesday, September 14th, 2021.

The mart manager reported that a “significant cooling off was clear” as lambs were back as much as €5/head on previous sales.

“Despite the pull in prices, a lively trade persisted, and we recorded a good clearance,” she remarked.

Lamb prices included:

  • 38 kg lambs by a Headford farmer – €104 – €2.74/kg;
  • 40.5 kg lambs by a Milltown farmer – €104 – €2.57/kg;
  • 43 kg lambs by a Tuam farmer – €106 – €2.47/kg;
  • 44 kg lambs by an Abbeyknockmoy farmer – €113 – €2.57/kg;
  • 46 kg lambs by a Ballinasloe farmer – €115 – €2.50/kg;
  • 48.55 kg lambs by a Turloughmore farmer – €121 – €2.49/kg;
  • 49 kg lambs by a Cummer farmer – €131 – €2.67/kg;
  • 52 kg lambs – €130 – €2.50/kg.
 Ewe lamb prices:

Devane reported that a “similar trend” was evident in ewe lamb trade with prices as follows:

  • 44 kg lambs by a Headford farmer – €130 – €2.95/kg;
  • 5 kg lambs by a Tuam farmer – €135 – €2.78/kg;
  • 50 kg lambs by a Corofin farmer – €139 – €2.78/kg;
  • 51 kg lambs by a Tuam farmer – €147 – €2.88/ kg;
  • 56 kg lambs by a Westport farmer – €160 – €2.86/kg.
Hogget prices:

Hoggets ranged from €140 to €230 with sample prices including:

  • 10 hoggets from a Kilmaine farmer – €174;
  • 10 hoggets from a Currandulla farmer – €206;
  • Also, 10 hoggets from a Milltown farmer – €180;
  • 9 hoggets from a Cummer farmer – €200;
  • 10 Hoggets from a Hollymount farmer – €230.
Breeding ewe prices:

Breeding ewes went under the hammer from €110 to €172:

  • 10 sheep from a Tuam farmer – €168;
  • 4 sheep from a Headford farmer – €172;
  • 6 sheep from a Tuam farmer – €158.
Cull ewe prices:

The mart manager reported a “measurable” change in the cull ewe trade, with prices hitting €182 for 110kg entries.

  • 5 kg ewes by a Kilamine farmer – €100;
  • 64 kg ewes by a Tuam farmer – €84 and 82 kg ewes – €127.
