Triplet calves provide glimmer of hope during Covid-19 crisis

A Co. Galway farmer is celebrating the unexpected arrival of triplet calves in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Catherina Cunnane.

John Lyons and family run a 30-strong suckler herd in Killimor, a small village, in Co. Galway.

One of their 5-year-old Aberdeen-Angus-cross cows, which they purchased from a neighbouring dairy enterprise as a calf, provided a glimmer of hope two weeks ago.

An unexpected arrival

Speaking to That’s Farming, Michelle, John’s daughter, said: “The cow only got a small bit of help during the calving process, but done most of it herself.”

“The calves, identical Limousin-cross bulls, surprised us with their arrival and are just over 2-weeks-old now. Both the dam and calves are doing well.”

“We have had several sets of twins in the past, but this is our very first set of triplet calves,” Michelle concluded.
