Sheep Trade: Weekly sheep kill drops to just over 54,000 head

Prices (including bonuses) for lambs are ranging from €5.20-€5.30/kg, once again this week.

It has been reported that producer groups are securing up to €5.35-€5.40/kg in processing plants.

Cull ewe quotes have improved with between €2.60-€2.85/kg available.

Throughput

In terms of throughput, the national sheep kill for the week commencing August 17th stood at 54,076 head, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s database. 63,907 sheep were processed during the same period last year.

Last week’s throughput:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 149;
  • Spring lambs: 46,606;
  • Ewes and rams: 7,320;
  • Light lambs: 1.

Cumulative [Include this week’s throughput]:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 787,605;
  • Spring lambs: 797,244;
  • Ewes and rams: 227,236;
  • Light lambs: 47.

Figures from the DAFM’s database show that the national kill for the year-to-date (excluding this week’s throughput) stands at 1,812,132 head, 86,287 head more than last year.

In comparison to this period last year, 36,896 more lambs/hoggets have been slaughtered, 74,133 more spring lambs, 24,428 more ewes and rams and 314 more light lambs.
