Sheep prices: How is trade fairing out?

In this news article, That’s Farming takes a look at sheep prices in Ballinrobe, Blessington and Kilkenny this week. 

Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart

According to Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart’s assistant manager, Teresa Gibsey, ewes with lambs at foot ranged from €100 to €318 for one ewe with twin lambs at foot at Thursday’s (May 11th, 2023), sheep sale.

She reported that 3rd crop ewe with twins at foot peaked at €302, while 2nd crop ewe with twin lambs at foot maxed out at €292.

Spring lambs made from €3.15 to €3.77/kg or €145 to €175.

Spring lambs:

  • 55kg, €175, €3.18/kg;
  • 49kg, €170, €3.47/kg;
  • 44kg, €160, €3.64/kg.;
  • 5kg, €145, €3.77/kg.

Lambs and hoggets sold for between €2.44/kg to €3.00/kg with an average of €2.77/kg.

The average price per head was approximately €124, holding firm on last week, according to Gibsey.

The top price of €162 was for 54kg ewe hoggets, making €3.00/kg.

Other prices from the day as follows –

  • 62kg ewe hoggets, €158, €2.55/kg;
  • 55kg ewe hoggets, €150, €2.73/kg;
  • 48kg ewe hoggets, €140, €2.92/kg.

Cull ewes ranged from €30 to €180 per head with an average of €109 paid per head., with sample prices as follows –

  • 94kg, €180, €1.91/kg;
  • 96kg, €178, €1.85/kg.
Blessington Mart  

According to a spokesperson for Blessington Mart, a “very strong” trade prevailed for spring lambs and quality hoggets at Tuesday’s (May 9th, 2023), sheep sale.

Prices ranged from €110 to €280 at its most recent general sheep sale.

Ewes with lambs at foot pushed from €160 to €280/unit, while heavy ewes made from €160 to €210/head and lighter ewes changed hands from €110 to €156/head.

On the other hand, spring lambs varied from €160 or €175/head or €112-€125 over the weight, while heavy hoggets fetched from €175 to €181/head or €107-€112 over the kg and factory hoggets sold from €154 to €172/head or €106 to €120 over.

Kilkenny Mart

According to George Candler, there was a “sharp” selling trade for hoggets and spring lambs at Monday’s (May 8th, 2023) sheep sale.

The mart’s auctioneer reported a top call of €183 for spring lambs, up to €178 for hoggets and up to €221 for cull ewes.

Spring lambs – €3.55-€3.83/kg or €158-€183/head:

  • 10 50kgs – €183;
  • 9 48kgs – 4184;
  • 20 47kgs – €178;
  • 12 46kgs – €166;
  • 12 45kgs – €168;
  • 10 44kgs – €165.

Factory hoggets – €3.10-€3.55/kg or €128-4156/head:

  • 10 50kgs – €156;
  • 12 49kgs – €154;
  • 10 48kgs – €155;
  • 10 46kgs – €158;
  • 10 44kgs – €156;
  • 8 43kgs – €138.

Butcher hoggets – €2.30-43.15/kg or €156-€178/head:

  • 10 76kgs – €177;
  • 10 72kgs – €176;
  • 17 69kgs – €177;
  • 15 61kgs – €175;
  • 24 54kgs – €170;
  • 10 52kgs – €164.

Other categories include:

  • Cast ewes – €86 to €221/head.
