Record number of calves at Castleisland

Dairy stock went under the hammer from €900-€1290 at Castleisland Mart on Monday, March 9th, according to a spokesperson.

They noted that there was special entry of dairy stock, including a clearance sale for a local farmer.

“A strong demand was seen for calved cows. A 6-year-old calved since Friday sold for €1,260, while an in-calf cow with her time-up sold for €1,100.”

“We saw a record number of calves hit the mart. Strong calves were in very high demand.” the spokesperson added.

Friesian, Hereford and Angus calves 

Friesian bulls ranged from €25- €192, while lighter calf sold for €70 and a strong 2-week-old FR pushed up to €140.

Hereford and Aberdeen-Angus bulls pushed from €120- €390 while heifers ranged from €110- €322. A 3-week-old Aberdeen-Angus heifers fetched €168 while a 4-week-old Hereford bull topped out at €382.

Continental calves

Continental bulls made from €220-€415, while heifers varied from €225-€430. A 3-week-old BB heifer sold for €370, while a 3-week-old Charolais bull found a new home at €415 and a 2-week-old Limousin realised €320.

“Continental calves were a flying trade.” the spokesperson concluded.
