Raphoe Mart report – sheep prices – 29-03-2021

There was an “outstanding trade” at Raphoe Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, March 29^th, according to Ann Harkin.

The mart manager reported that “spring lambs, in particular, met a brisk online trade with plenty of competition from farmers and butchers for these”.

• 1st prize-winning spring 50kgs were exhibited by Johnny Gibbons and purchased by William Doherty Butchers Clonmany for €282 each;
• 2^nd-prize-winning spring Lambs 48kgs were exhibited by Donal Mullaney and purchased by McCarron Butchers, Raphoe for €278 each;
• 3^rd-prize-winning spring lambs 48kgs were exhibited by John Gallagher and purchased by McCarron Butchers Raphoe for €240 each.

Other spring lambs sold at:

• €120 to €150 for 33-36kgs;
• €150 to €180 for 37-39kgs;
• €180 to €238 for 40-50kgs.

Other categories:

• Hoggets ranged from €110 to a high of €172 for 54kgs;
• Ewes with one lamb sold from €140 to €200;
• Ewes with two lambs sold from €220 to €320 with one ewe and two lambs selling for €370.
• Fat ewes went under the hammer from €80 to €192.

George Candler reported a “record-breaking day for spring lambs” with a top call of €211. Furthermore, he noted that hoggets peaked at €178, while cull ewes sold to €163.

“Perhaps, the sheep farmer will be able to take a holiday later in the year,” George commented.

Spring lambs – €4.25/kg-€4.91/kg or €165-€211/head:

• 8 47kgs – €209;
• 15 43kgs – €211;
• 6 42kgs – €198;
• 5 41kgs – €193;
• 8 40kgs – €185;
• 7 39kgs – €175.

Ennis Mart – sheep prices – 29-03-2021:

Just over 280 sheep were on offer with a small entry of spring lambs, according to a spokesperson.

Spring lambs generally made €160 to a high of €184. The spokesperson reported that hoggets a shade easier, but top quality lots held “very strong” with tops of €183.

“Cull ewes made €62 to €156 with huge demand for these, especially the fleshed ewes.” the spokesperson added.

• 56kgs – €181 – €3.23/kg;
• 49kgs – €183 – €3.73/kg;
• 44kgs – €165 – €3.75/kg;
• 43kgs – €170 – €3.95/kg;
