Following the launch of its suckler-beef catalogue, Progressive Genetics has, in recent weeks, published its ‘Coloured Dairy Breed’ sire directory, writes Catherina Cunnane.
It features an array of Fleckvieh, MRI Rotbunt, Danish Red, Milking Shorthorn, Ayrshire, Scandanavian Red, Norwegian Red, Montbelliarde, Jersey (including ‘type’Jersey) and Brown Swiss sires.
A spokesperson for Progressive Genetics told That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane:
“Progressive Genetics’ Coloured Dairy Breeds catalogue offers a large range of available sires. We are delighted to launch our largest-ever offering of sexed semen.”
“Our dairy-beef programme focuses on maximising short gestation and calving ease whilst also trying to get the most value possible from the dairy-beef animals’ carcass to maximise the profitability of dairy-beef production systems.”
“Included in our ‘Coloured Breeds 2023’ catalogue are a vast array of coloured bulls to suit every breeder,” the spokesperson concluded.
The spokesperson then previewed the following highlights from the panel:
FLECKVIEH – ZERO ONE TA SI8379
According to the spokesperson, this is an “impressive” dual-purpose bull with 30kg of fat and protein combined.
They outlined that with a health sub-index of €31, he is what they deem him to be “an outstanding example of the breed”.
MRI ROTBUNT – KAY S4022
New to Progressive Genetics this year is KAY, a bull who boasts “exceptional” PTAs for fat and protein, a high health sub-index and -.3.85 days gestation.
DANISH JERSEY – VJ ALSTRUP HABBIT HAPPENS JE7779
A new offering from Viking Genetics, VJ Happens (available sexed only) is an “impressive” bull with 0.58% fat and 0.32% protein.
They outlined that his high production sub-index, coupled with “excellent” feet and legs, make him a “welcome” addition to its portfolio.
TYPE JERSEY – DULET BOWLERS S4127
Dulet Bowlers is another new addition to its portfolio for the coming season.
This “high-type Jersey sire brings excellent conformation, coupled with impressive production”, they noted.
AYRSHIRE – BRIERYSIDE HAIL S3712
According to the spokesperson, Brieryside Hail is bred from an “exceptional” dam, Brieryside Oblique Cherry (EX94 3E) and brings improved fertility and increased solid percentages.
BROWN SWISS – RULLY (No Code)
Another new offering for the 2023 season is Rully, a Brown Swiss bull from ABS.
According to the spokesperson, he brings longevity, “great” feet and legs and “exceptional” udders.
