Videos: Cull cows to €2,450 & bulls to €2,300 in Balla

Farming News/Mart Reports: Aurivo Balla Mart – Cattle Prices – 08-07-2023

According to Stephen Hannon, bullocks reached €2,090, heifers topped at €2,000 and dry cows made up to €2,450 at Aurivo Balla Mart on Saturday, July 8^th, 2023.

Two rings were in operation at the mart’s most recent general weekly cattle sale, with numbers holding steady on previous weeks.

The general manager of Aurivo Marts and manager of Balla Mart told www.thatsfarming.com:

“A lot of cattle out were out again, especially store types, and there were some great prices paid, with a blend of ringside and online activity.”

In ring one, bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €3.01/kg, while stores in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €2.98/kg, and heavier bullocks 500kg averaged €2.71/kg.

According to Hannon, “quality, heavy bullocks 700kg+ were making up to €1,450 with the weight”.

Top of the town in this ring was a 29-month-old Feb-2021-born CHX bullock, out of a SHX dam, weighing 780kgs at €2,090 or €2.68/kg.

Heifer prices:

In the heifer ring, lighter stores 300 – 400kg averaged €3.10/kg, while those 400kg to 500kg levelled at €2.98/kg and entries 500kg+ sold for an average of €2.87/kg.

Leading the price table at €2,000 or €3.45/kg was a LMX, weighing 580kg.

Dry cows:

Cull cows were sold in ring one after bullocks and bull weanlings.

Weanling bulls 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.01/kg, while those 350kg to 450kg levelled at €2.75/kg, with a 340kg LM bull making €1,100 or €3.24/kg.

According to Hannon, a smaller entry of dry cows crossed the scale, but prices “are sticking firm with interest from buyers”.

“The best made from €2.40 to €2.80/kg with a top call of 900kg for a pedigree CH cow, born in May 2016, that made €2,450,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the suckler ring, with a varied selection on offer, saw a top call of €2,200 for a May 2018 cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot.

• CH – May-2017-born – 1085kgs – €2,300;
• FR – March-2019-born – 755kgs – €1,480.
