‘Beef factories appear to be spreading the message of gloom and doom’ – Candler

Kilkenny Mart – Cattle Prices – 08-06-2023

“Beef factories appear to be spreading the message of gloom and doom, but we were pleasantly surprised with trade in Kilkenny Mart on Thursday,” reported livestock auctioneer, George Candler following the sale on June 8th, 2023.

He added that cull cows are reported to be “coming under pressure”, but Thursday’s trade proved “remarkably firm” for the 120 on offer.

“€1/kg was the lowest price for Friesian cows that were in relatively poor condition, and highs of €2.30/kg, with continental types ranging from €1.70 to €2.80/kg, resulting in 100% clearance.”

“Beef bullocks and heifers also sold well with a price range of €2.35 to €3.25/kg with a top of €3.50 for a 475 kg Charolais.”

“The reduction of numbers on offer is stabilising the trade,” he remarked.
