Over 75,600 extra sheep slaughtered in 2020

Over 75,600 extra sheep have been killed this year as at the same stage last year, increasing from 667,372 to 743,018.

That’s according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s (DAFM) database. 

Last week’s throughput:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 41,761;
  • Spring lambs: 3,833;
  • Ewes and rams: 4,562;
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total: 50,156. 

Cumulative (excludes this week’s throughput):

  • Lambs/hoggets: 648,446;
  • Spring lambs: 6,186;
  • Ewes and rams: 6,518; 
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total: 56,811. 

Corresponding week last year:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 43,733;
  • Spring lambs: 6,560; 
  • Ewes and rams: 6,518; 
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total:

Prices

Between €6.20-€6.40/kg is available for spring lambs this week with higher deals of 20c/kg being sealed, while €2.70-€2.80/kg is on the table for cull ewes. €5.70-€5.90 is being quoted for hoggets.
