Over 45,000 more sheep finished in 2020

In contrast to the trend of the previous week, the number of sheep slaughtered last week has risen in comparison to the same period of 2019.

Last week’s throughput came in at 56,125, bringing the total for the tear so far to 1,022,544 – which is an increase of over 45,000 from the same period of last year.

Last week’s throughput:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 7,817;
  • Spring lambs: 40,725;
  • Ewes and rams: 7,583;
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total: 56,125.

Cumulative (excludes this week’s throughput):

  • Lambs/hoggets: 774,422;
  • Spring lambs: 122,519;
  • Ewes and rams: 125,575;
  • Light lambs: 28;
  • Total: 1,022,544.

Corresponding week last year:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 16,193;
  • Spring lambs: 29,981;
  • Ewes and rams: 7,673;
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total: 53,847.

Last year’s throughput:

Prices:

Despite an increased throughput, prices have remained much the same this week, with hoggets earning €5.50/kg and ewes fetching between €2.60/kg and €2.80/kg.

Spring lamb price has fallen, however, declining by 10c to €6.10-€6.20/kg, although some factories have been paying a top price of €6.30/kg.
