‘Much more confidence and optimism have entered the sheep sector this year’

Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale, which was held on Tuesday, September 7th, attracted just over 700 lots, according to George Candler.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that all categories performed well, with a 98% clearance recorded.

More store lambs than usual on offer achieving prices from €75-€95/head with 29 kilos making €74 and 33 kilos €81.”

“Butcher-types peaked at €130 for 52 kilos. Breeding hoggets, which shows numbers been offered for sale decreasing, peaked at €210.”

“Much more confidence and optimism have entered the sheep sector this year and long may it continue,” Candler added.

Butcher lambs – €2.25-€2.53/kg or €115-€130/head:

  • X10 53kgs – €120;
  • X25 52kgs – €130;
  • X20 50kgs – €118;
  • X13 49kgs – €124.

Factory lambs – €2.30-€2.69/kg or €100-€121/head:

  • X10 47kgs – €114;
  • X14 45kgs – €121;
  • X10 44kgs – €102;
  • X12 43kgs – €199.

Store lambs – €2.35 -€2.50/kg or €75-€95/head;

  • X20 40kgs – €95;
  • X15 36kg – €86;
  • X14 33kg – €81;
  • X13 32kg – €80.

  • Cast ewes – €55-€125/head;
  • Breeding hoggets – €165-€210/head.
