That is according to a spokesperson who reported that “trade held steady all around again, with shippers very active in the bull ring and underpinning the trade”.

“Heifer weanlings are just holding the trade. Meanwhile, there was a larger than expected entry of calves with 50 on offer and a number of these 3 to 4-months-old.”

“The tops of these made to €595, while only a handful of suckler stock available and topped at €1,660 for a pair,” the spokesperson added.

Kilkenny Mart

According to George Candler, a small entry of some 550 lots crossed the scales at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, August 10th, 2023.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that “there was a smaller sale of cattle compared to last week, with a sharper trade for cull cows and quality lots”.

“Some beef types met a sharper trade which was helped by smaller numbers. For the first time in weeks, the trade appears to be settling,”

“Perhaps the reduction in beef quotes, which was happening on a weekly basis, may be slowing but restoration of confidence in this sector is badly needed,” he added.

Kilrush Mart

According to a spokesperson for Kilrush Mart, just over 300 lots came under the hammer at its general cattle sale on Wednesday, August 9th, 2023.

They noted that “trade held quite well overall, especially for slightly more forward stock”.

“There was a big sale for the time of year with a lot of the traditional breeds available both in stronger and lighter cattle.”

“The weather has definitely forced cattle out early, with many farmers with large lots at Wednesday’s sale,” the spokesperson added.
