Man arrested following suspicious activity around digger

Gardaí recently arrested a man in Clone, Co. Monaghan, in relation to an incident involving a digger.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning (May 2nd).

The incident

Gardaí in the area were carrying out COVID-19 patrols when the observed a male acting suspiciously near a digger that was parked along the side of the road.

The man attempted to flee the scene and a foot chase ensued. Gardaí managed to capture and arrest the 30-year-old man before transporting him to Monaghan Garda station where he was detained for questioning.

It was later revealed that the man was attempting to siphon diesel from the machine and he has since been charged with theft-related offences.

Advice

On their social media page, the Cavan-Monaghan Garda Division urged all building and agricultural contractors to take all measures necessary to secure their machinery when it is not in use and to not leave them in such isolated locations.
