€6,800 Grangeford Paulo Maldini tops Limousin premier in Roscrea

Report (with bull prices) from Irish Limousin Cattle Society sale held at Roscrea Mart on Monday, May 3rd, 2021. 

Bulls levelled at an average of €3,650 at the Irish Limousin Cattle Society’s premier sale in Roscrea Mart on Monday, May 3^rd, 2021.

According to the society, 85% of males changed hands as prices ranged from €2,300 to €6,800. Furthermore, eight bulls made €4,000 or more.

At the same sale in 2019, the clearance rate for males stood at 77%, with an average price of €3,372.

Limousin sale Roscrea report 

Topping the bull sale at €6,800 was GRANGEFORD PAULO MALDINI ET from Gary Morrissey’s herd in Bennekerry, Co. Carlow.

Paulo Maldini is a Wilodge Cerberus, son and out of noted donor dam, Procters Ena (Haltcliffe Vermount X Neutron).

Born in October 2019, this young bull has a muscle score of 133 and five-star ratings in terminal index, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter milk.

BALLINRAHIN PATSY ET from Michael Malone’s herd Ballickmoyler, Co. Laois was knocked down for €6,100.

Patsy is a Ballinrahin Kent Et son (Loosebeare Fantastic X Ampertaine Elgin), and his dam is the highly-rated Wilodge Cerberus daughter, Brandon Jenny.

Patsy has five-star ratings in terminal index, carcass weight and carcass conformation with a predicted calving ease of just 2.5%.

Next up at €5,900 was multi-starred CLONBONNY PLUMTREE, an outstanding Plumtree Fantastic son, bred by Tony and Darren Hartnett, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

Plumtree’s dam Clonbonny Kerry has Gamin and Towthorpe Dubai in her sire stack.

Plumtree boasts five-star ratings in almost all traits, including a replacement index of €130 and a terminal index of €162.

Pic 3 – CASTLEFLEMING RED DIESEL – €4,600

Also by Plumtree Fantastic is CASTLEFLEMING RED DIESEL, a 13-month old bred by Gerald Wall, Errill, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, at €4,600.

Red Diesel’s dam, Bova Juno, has Towthorpe Dubai and Dahlia in her back pedigree. He boasts five-star ratings in terminal index, carcass weight and carcass conformation, and carries two copies of the F94L profit gene.

Tony and Darren Hartnett returned to the ring with the €4,500 CLONBONNY ROCKY, another Plumtree Fantastic son. Born in January 2020, Rocky has an array of five-star ratings.

RUTLAND PABLO, a stylish grandson of the aforementioned Plumtree Fantastic, found a new owner at €4,400.

Noel Ruttledge, Ballina, Co. Mayo bred the bull, sired by Mullary Intrepid (Plumtree Fantastic X Nenuphar), the overall male champion at the National Show 2014.

Pablo has five-star ratings in terminal index, carcass weight and carcass conformation. Besides, he also carries two copies of F94L profit gene.

The winner of the best young bull in the south-west herds’ competition 2020, BALLYLIN POPEYE, fetched €4,400.

17-month-old Popeye has Grangeford Jojo Et, Lowerffrydd Empire and Wood Road Donald Et in his sire stack.

Popeye, bred by Limerick’s Brian Frawley, came to the ring with five-star ratings in terminal index, docility, carcass weight and carcass conformation.

At the same price tag was the Ewdenvale Ivor son CROHANE ROKY from Imelda Vaughan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Roky has a five-star replacement index of €174 and a five star terminal index of €167. Roxy’s dam, Crohane Mary, is a daughter of Tomschoice Iceberg. He has an extremely low predicted calving difficulty of 2%.

€4,000 and under 

Pic 8 – DROMANIG PJ – €4,000

€4,000 was top call for DROMANIG PJ from Kieran Noonan’s herd in Charleville, Co. Cork. PJ has Kaprico Eravelle, Castleview Virulent (Et) and Imperial in his sire stack. Multi starred PJ carries two copies of the F94L gene.

Two bulls sold for €3,900. Firstly, at this price was MAYBE PLANTATION from Michael Gunn, Elphin, Co. Roscommon.  Plantation, a Scottish born son of Lowflan Lee, has five-star ratings for several traits and carries one copy of F94L and one Q204X gene.

Sean Ryan, Cappamore, Co. Limerick bred SLIABH FELIM PADDY, the second bull to reach €3,900.

Paddy is an EBY son and is out of Ampertaine Foreman daughter, Sliabh Felim Martha. Paddy has two copies of F94L myostatin gene and five-star ratings in terminal index, carcass weight and carcass conformation.

The Wilodge Goldcard son, RUTLAND PERCY, sold for €3,800. Percy was bred in county Mayo by Noel Ruttledge. Percy’s dam is the homebred, Queenshead Altea daughter, Rutland Jess.

MARLHILL PETER 2, bred by James Parkinson, Cashel, Co, Tipperary, went under the hammer €3,600.

This August-2019-born bull has Roundhill Saturn, On-Dit, Woodview Gregory and Fieldson Alfy in his sire stack. Besides, he has five-star ratings in replacement index, terminal index, docility, carcass weight and carcass conformation.

€3,500 or under

CLONAGH PRINCE from Garreth Behan, Portlaoise, Co. Laois sold for €3,500. Prince has Plumtree Fantastic, Ideal 23 and Nenuphar in his lineage. Coming from a very milky dam, Prince also has five-star ratings in terminal index, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter calving interval.

The sole Bavardage son on offer, CORROY PINKMAN, came from Declan Filan’s yard in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

€3,500 17-month-old Pinkman has an array of five-star ratings, including a replacement index value of €128. His grandam is the renowned show cow, Carwin Hillery.
