‘More beef-type animals on offer as farmers let down by factories restricting numbers’

According to George Candler, a larger entry of some 700 lots crossed the scales at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, June 15^th, 2023.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that trade “remained firm” at yesterday’s sale.

“More beef-type animals were on offer as farmers have been let down by factories who are restricting numbers,” he claimed.

“Trade was solid for all beef and forward animals in both the bullock and the heifer ring.

“Most sellers were happy with their returns, with 99% of heifers finding new homes with 98% bullocks on offer selling,” he added.

Meanwhile, cull cows saw 87 of the 89 on offer selling with €1.05-€2.30/kg on the table for Friesian types, while continentals changed hands from €1.60/kg to €2.75/kg.

Beef heifers – €2.50-€3.10/kg or €1,450-€2,380/head:

• CH – 795kgs – €2,380;
