Spring lambs reach €180/head at Kilkenny Mart

Kilkenny Mart – sheep prices – 22-03-2021

Some 300 lots went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, March 22nd, according to George Candler.

The mart’s auctioneer reported an “electric trade for all sheep” with a 100% clearance.

Hoggets peaked at €180/head, while spring lambs sold to €180/kg and cull ewes reached €185/head.

  • 8 60kgs – €181;
  • 30 56kgs – €171;
  • 8 57kgs – €180;
  • 22 50kgs – €159;
  • 10 52kgs – €165.
Factory hoggets:
  • 10 48kgs – €175;
  • 10 48kgs – €173;
  • 12 47kgs – €176;
  • 10 46kgs – €174;
  • 11 45kgs – €145;
  • 12 44kgs – €140.
Spring lambs
  • 40-45kgs – €155-€180/head.

Some 250 lots went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, March 15th, according to George Candler.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that numbers are “staying small” with a top call of €174 for 57kg entries. “The want continues with the €174 barrier broken on a few occasions.”

Butchers’ lambs- €3.00-€3.36/kg or €155-€174/head:
  • 10 55kg – €173;
  • 12 57kg – €174;
  • 11 51kg – €170;
  • 11 50kg – €168;
  • 10 54kg – €173.
Factory lambs – €3.00-€3.33/kg or €128-€163/head:
  • 13 49kg – €163;
  • 13 48kg – €157;
  • 12 46kg – €149;
  • 8 45kg – €148;
  • 7 44kg – €143;
  • 6 43kg – €132.
Other categories:
  • Cast ewes – €87-€154/head.
Cattle sale 18-03-2021

Just over 900 lots went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, March 18th, according to George Candler.

The mart’s auctioneer reported another “good solid trade for all lots with quality marginally less than last week”.

Candler reported that Friesian bullocks exceeded €2.00/kg with close to €2.30/kg for better-quality Hereford and Angus-types.

Upcoming sales (online-only due to Covid-19 restrictions):
  • Sheep sale – Mondays at 10 am with dairy sale at 12 pm
  • Calf sale – Tuesdays at 11 am.
  • Cattle sale – Thursday – Cows at 10 am, followed by heifers, with bullocks at 10:30 am.
