Kilkenny Mart – sheep prices – 31-01-2022

According to George Candler, some 300 lots went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Saturday, January 31^st, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported a 100% clearance for both lambs/hoggets and cull ewes. Hoggets peaked at €165, and ewes sold to €173/head.

Butcher lambs – €2.90-€3.16/kg or €148-€165/head:

• 12 55kgs – €165;
• 10 54kgs – €158;

• 22 51kgs – €155;

Factory lambs – €3.00-€3.27/kg or €135-€147/head;

• 10 48kgs – €146;

Store lambs – €2.85-€3.30/kg or €95-€132/head:

Last week’s sheep prices:

According to George Candler, a much smaller sale comprising 200 entries went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, January 24^th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that sheep met with an easier trade compared to last week.

“The smaller numbers helped steady the trade with lambs/hoggets to a high of €156/head. Cull ewes peaked at €182/head. The sale resulted in a 100% clearance.”

• Butcher lambs – €2.80-€3.10/kg or €148-€156/head;
• Factory lambs – €2.90-€3.13/kg or €125-€145/head;
• Cast ewes – €50-€182/head.

Cattle prices: 

According to George Candler, just under 800 lots passed through the rings at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, January 27^th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that the sale attracted over 220 cull cows, which “exceeded the previous week’s excellent prices”.

He added that a slightly smaller entry of bullocks turned out for sale, with a “buoyant” trade prevailing in this ring.

Candler added that heifers, especially lighter store-types, recorded the “biggest” increases of €20-€40/head on the previous week’s returns.
