Kilkenny Mart – Sheep Prices – 28-03-2022

According to George Candler, some 450 lots went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Tuesday, March 28^th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that hoggets/lambs sold to a top call of €172/head, while cull ewes peaked at €230/head.

Butcher lambs – €2.90-€3.30/kg or €156-€172/head:

• 17 58kgs – €170;
• 10 54kgs – €168;
• 20 56kgs – €170;
• 15 55kgs – €172;
• 10 53kgs – €171;
• 10 50kgs – €165.

Factory lambs – €3.15-€3.68/kg or €128-€163/head:

• 11 45kgs – €163;
• 8 44kgs – €162;
• 8 43kgs – €138;
• 7 42kgs – €137;
• 10 41kgs – €133;
• 8 40kgs – €130.

Other categories:

• Cast ewes – €117-€230/head.

Dairy cattle:

• Friesian maiden heifers – €550-€750/head
• In-calf Friesian cows/heifers – €1,000-€1,500/head;
• Freshly calved Friesian heifers – €1,100-€2,080/head;
• Freshly calved Friesian cows – €1,050-€1,800/head.

Last week’s cattle sale

According to George Candler, some 1,500 cattle crossed the sales at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, March 24^th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that this was “one of the biggest sales in the last few years” at the mart.

He noted that the turnover was “marginally short” of €1.5 million.

Candler explained that forward and beef-type heifers and bullocks met with an “excellent” trade, while plain, light cattle were “a bit more difficult to sell”.

• Bullocks: 600+ – €2.00-€3.08/kg or €1,250-€2,210/head;
•  500-600kgs – €1.80-€3.20/kg or €1,180-€1,950/head;
•  400-500kgs – €1.80-€3.19/kg or €950-€1,580/head;
• <400kgs – €1.80-€3.19/kg or €950-€1,580/head;
• Friesian cull cows – €1.05-€2.30/kg;
• Continental cull cows – €1.60-€2.68/kg;
• Beef heifers – €2.00-€2.94/kg or €1,280-€2,090/head;
• Forward store heifers – €1.80-€3.04/kg or €980-€1,290/head:
• Light store heifers – €1.70-€3.11/kg or €580-€1,170/head.
