Cull ewes to €185/head in easier trade at Kilkenny Mart

Kilkenny Mart – sheep prices – 28-02-2022

According to George Candler, some 300 lots went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, February 28th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that trade was “not as buoyant” as the previous week.

He explained that lambs reached €166/head, while cull ewes peaked at €185/head.

Butcher lambs – €2.80-€3.12/kg or €150-€166/head:

  • 10 56kgs – €157;
  • 10 55kgs – €158;
  • 12 54kgs – €166;
  • 10 53kgs – €157;
  • 20 51kgs – €159;
  • 8 50kgs – €155.

Factory lambs – €3.10-€3.30/kg or €132-€152/head:

  • 8 48kgs – €152;
  • 7 47kgs – €148;
  • 18 46kgs – €147;
  • 10 45kgs – €143;
  • 10 44kgs – €141;
  • 18 40kgs – €132.

Previous week’s cattle sale

According to Candler, some 1,050 cattle passed through the ring at the mart’s weekly sale on Thursday, February 24th, 2022.

He reported that a larger sale resulted in a turnover in excess of €1.2 million.

Candler explained that trade remained “very firm” for all types of cattle. Beef-type Friesian bullocks made up to €2.42/kg. A 770kg Charolais commanded a top call of €2,240 in this ring.

Meanwhile, in the heifer ring, prices reached €1,960, which was recorded for a 730kg Limousin.

Bullocks:

  • 600kgs – €1.90-€3.02/kg or €1,240-€2,240/head;
  • 500-600kgs – €1.90-€3.04/kg or €980-€1,780/head;
  • 400-500kgs – €1.70-€3.12/kg or €690-€1,480/head;
  • <400kgs – €1.50-€3.53/kg or €500-€1,240/head.

Cull cows:

  • Friesians – €1.26-€2.21/kg;
  • Continentals – €1.60-€2.55/kg.

Heifers:

  • Beef-types – €2.00-€2.98/kg or €1,430-€1,960/head;
  • Forward stores – €1.90-€3.04/kg or €890-€1,430/head;
  • Light stores – €1.90-€3.32/kg or €550-€1,080/head.
Last week’s calf prices

According to George Candler, some 500 calves went under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that prices ranged from €10-€350/head at its weekly calf sale.

Speaking following the sale, he said:

“A bigger sale of calves this week, with continental-types plus Hereford and Angus-crosses selling very well.”

“Smaller Friesian bulls were difficult to sell, but Friesians with size and good conformation ranged from €140-€250/head,” Candler said.

  • First-rate Friesian bulls – €80-€250/head;
  • Second-rate Friesian bulls – €10-€60/head;
  • Continental bulls – €250-€525/head;
  • Continental heifers – €200-€395/head;
  • Aberdeen Angus/Hereford bulls – €180-€375/head;
  • Aberdeen Angus/Hereford heifers – €150-€350/head.
