‘Lack of bite’ in trade and weather draw fewer numbers to Kilkenny

Kilkenny Mart – Sheep Prices – 16-01-2023

According to George Candler, some 300 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, January 16^th, 2023.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that numbers were “well back on last week, maybe due to the lack of bite in the trade or the fact that road conditions were poor, especially untreated side road”.

Butcher lambs – €2.70-€2.85/kg or €135-€151/head:

• 14 54kgs – €151;
• 20 53kgs – €150;
• 12 52kgs – €146;
• 10 51kgs – €140;
• 5 50kgs – €137;
• 7 49kgs – €136.

Factory lambs – €2.70-€2.83/kg or €114-€131/head:

• 10 48kgs – €131;
• 8 47kgs – €130;
• 6 46kgs – €128;
• 5 45kgs – €126;
• 8 44kgs – €121;
• 10 42kgs – €118.

Store lambs – €2.65-€2.85/kg or €88-€115/head:

• 11 41kgs – €115;
• 10 40kgs – €114;
• 11 39kgs – €108;
• 8 38kgs – €105;
• 5 37kgs – €101;
• 7 36kgs – €98.

Other categories of sheep:

• Cast ewes – €44-€157/head.

Dairy stock:

• Freshly-calved Friesian heifers – €1,620-€1,920/head;
• In-calf Friesian heifers – €1,000-€1,700/head.

Last week’s sheep prices

According to George Candler, a slightly larger entry of some 700 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, January 9^th, 2023.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that trade was back €4-€7/head at this week’s sheep sale.

Candler commented that “the fact that factory quotes are in the €6.00-€6.20/kg bracket is not encouraging for those who bought stores”.

He remarked that “sheep prices were disappointing, especially if you take into account the price of store lambs and the increase in feed costs.”

Candler stated that “it is difficult to see any dramatic lift in prices going forward in the next few weeks”.
