Kilkenny Mart – sheep prices – 07-03-2022

According to George Candler, some 350 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, March 7^th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that a “marginally” bigger entry of sheep met with a “slightly sharper trade all-round”.

He outlined that lambs/hoggets peaked at €165/head, while heavy cull ewes topped out at €201.

Butcher lambs – €2.90-€3.16/kg or €152-€165/head:

• 10 56kgs – €165;
• 10 55kgs – €164;
• 8 53kgs – €163;
• 19 52kgs – €158;
• 10 54kgs – €159;
• 10 50kgs – €158.

Factory lambs – €3.10-€3.38/kg or €130-€157/head:

• 5 49kgs – €157;
• 6 47kgs – €149;
• 10 46kgs – €148;
• 8 45kgs – €152;
• 7 44kgs – €147;
• 7 43kgs – €137.

Other categories:

• Cast ewes – €90-€201/head.

Dairy cow prices:

• Freshly-calved Friesians – 2^nd to 8^th lactation – €1,000-€1,850/head;
• Freshly calved Friesian heifers – €1,300-€2,000/head.

According to George Candler, just over 1,300 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, March 3^rd, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that a much larger sale resulted in a turnover in excess of €1.4 million.

He commented that “trade remained very strong for quality cattle”. Candler explained that bullocks peaked at €2,500 and cows topped out at €2,220.

• Bullocks 600kgs+ – €2.00-€3.03/kg or €1,240-€2,500/head;
• 500-600kgs – €1.90-€3.05/kg or €1,020-€1,770/head;
• 400-500kgs – €1.85-€3.14/kg or €770-€1,480/head;
• <400kgs – €1.80-€3.43/kg or €550-€1,320/head;
• Continental cull cows – €1.60-€2.89/kg;
• Friesian cull cows – €1.15-€2.30/kg;
• Beef heifers – €2.20-€2.98/kg or €1,350-€1,830/head;
• Forward store heifers – €2.10-€3.14/kg or €1,050-€1,490/head;
• Light store heifers – €1.80-€3.29/kg or €550-€1,090/head.
