Kilkenny Mart report – sheep prices – 04-10-2021

According to George Candler, over 600 sheep were on offer at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, October 4^th, 2021.

The mart’s auctioneer reported a “lively trade all round” for lambs and cull ewes at this week’s sheep sale.

“A similar size sale to last week with all lambs meeting an excellent trade. Cull ewes were of lesser quality compared to other weeks.”

“Breeding hoggets were difficult to sell with a top call of €200. This price was the exception rather than the rule,” Candler added.

Butcher lambs – €2.50-€2.82/kg or €130-€144/head:

• 21 56kgs – €141;
• 10 54kgs – €140;
• 8 53kgs – €143;
• 10 52kgs – €140;
• 8 51kgs – €144;
• 10 50kgs – €139.

Factory lambs – €2.50-€2.82/kg or €110-€127/head:

• 8 46kgs – €118;
• 10 45kgs – €127;
• 8 44kgs – €119;
• 17 43kgs – €115;
• 10 42kgs – €114;
• 8 40kgs – €111.

Store lambs – €2.70-€3.08/kg or €80-€114/head:

• 11 38kgs – €110;
• 10 37kgs – €114;
• 10 36kgs – €100;

Last week’s sale

According to George Candler, some 600 entries were on offer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, September 127^th.

The mart’s auctioneer reported a “good, solid trade” for all entries, with more interest in butcher and factory-type lambs.

He noted that cull ewes peaked at €158/head while breeding hoggets climbed to €240/head and breeding rams peaked at €610/head.

Sheep prices:

• Butcher lambs – €2.45-€2.82/kg or €132-€146/head;
• Factory lambs – €2.60-€2.79/kg or €111-€131/head;
• Store lambs – €2.60-€3.09/kg or €80-€111/head;
• Cast ewes: €47-€158/head.
