Kick-start your career in the dairy industry with a global milking machine company

GEA, which is providing innovative solutions for farms around the globe since 1926 including brands such as Westfalia Surge and Milfos, is currently seeking two apprentices.

GEA’s Milking and Dairy Farming Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting (MAMF) apprenticeships are based in Munster.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to join our growing team based in Ballincollig Co. Cork in this exciting and thriving industry.”

On successful completion of this Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting apprenticeship, the apprentice is awarded a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting.

The company’s product ranges include conventional herringbone and rotary milking parlours, robotic milking, cooling tanks, barn equipment and automated feeding.

Core duties will include:
  • Installing new GEA milking and dairy farming equipment including robots;
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair any equipment issues that arise;
  • Carry out planned maintenance;
  • Experience in fitting, welding & electrical problem solving an advantage, but training will be provided. A farming background/interest is also an advantage – high energy levels, ambition & ‘can-do’ attitude essential.
  • Problem-solving ability is essential as is the ability to learn ‘on the job’;
  • Be able to read technical manuals and be computer literate;
  • Excellent customer service skills and general communication skills;
  • Be able to work extended hours and on occasion work away from home;
  • Comfortable working independently or as part of a team;
  • Demonstrate good work practices including timekeeping, tidiness, responsibility, quality, and safety awareness.

Continued growth during Covid-19 pandemic

Speaking to That’s Farming, Paul Kirwan of GEA said: “It is a really strong trade. Most people who come into the milking machine business get no formal qualifications; I think this is putting people off.”

“We felt to bring new young people into the business we had to offer them something that would stand to them. GEA in Ireland has over 40 field technicians servicing various industries in Ireland from Glanbia, to Dairygold and West Cork Co-ops to name a few and all these guys would receive a similar level of qualifications.”

“I am new enough to GEA, but we have already recruited three new staff this year in the middle of a global pandemic. I find the company a really good place to work.”

“Our team is small but there is always someone to answer a phone to help you out when you have a question. Our solution center in Cork makes us the first global manufacturer to open its own dealership in the south-west of Ireland.” Kirwan concluded.
