Kepak site to close

Kepak is “temporarily” suspending operations at its beef processing plant in Co. Clare.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the company explained that against a backdrop of “challenging marketing conditions” for the beef industry in Europe, the plant has been procuring cattle at a price premium associated with markets such as the US, China and the UK.

The spokesperson outlined that Kepak Clare is not approved for exports to such markets and “cannot achieve the associated price premium to remain competitive.”

This, the spokesperson added, leaves no alternative to a temporary closure.

“Efforts are being made to facilitate interested staff at alternative Kepak sites, while all other staff will be temporarily laid off for the duration of the operational suspension.”

“The future of the factory will remain under review during the temporary closure.” the statement concluded.
